Let’s start a little Q & A today – well, with a focus on the questions:
Do you ever lay in bed, scroll through Instagram on your phone while you watch your favorite series on your laptop, meanwhile doing some online shopping on your tablet – adding the 24th pair of sneakers to your cart by instantly hoping they won’t fit because there is anyways no free spot left in your closet?
At work, the thing you give most attention to all day long is your computer screen, the coffee machine, and maybe also the cute new colleague working in the office next door?
Have you ever been on a secret FBI mission to find facts about your bestie’s new crush and are already way through his cousin’s neighbor’s sister’s fiancé ‘s profile accidentally liking a post back from 2014?
Did you ever secretly train your Mario Kart or Fifa skills to show off at the next night with your homies – of course pretending you never play by yourself because who would actually do that?
Any (or maybe all) of this sounds pretty familiar? Don’t worry Kapten, you’re not alone. Did you realize that all of these somehow include any kind of screen types? On average, we spend more than 7 hours per day by looking on screens – and counting. This can be smartphones, tablets, netbooks, etc. Modern technology is so integrated into our everyday life that it takes up an immense amount of our time. But we will come back to this later.
FOR NOW, LET'S START A NEW ROUND OF QUESTIONS
You mostly protect your skin with sunscreen when you sunbathe, right? And you probably also wear sunglasses when the sun shines, also right? These are both smart things to do because otherwise the sun would make your skin look like Mr. Crabs or you would be just too blind to see anything.
But what does this have in common with the first Q&A part?
We use sunscreen and wear sunglasses to protect our skin and eyes from too much UV light that can quickly cause harm e.g. through sunburns, let alone the long-term effects. However, we do nothing to protect our eyes from the light that comes from the various screens we look at every day. Now you might ask yourself why you should do so? The answer is blue light.
WHAT ACTUALLY IS BLUE LIGHT?
Blue light, or correctly said high energy visible (HEV) light, comes mostly from all kinds of screens we are looking at every day. The blue light irritates our eyes and is very tiring already in the short run. For a good reason, smartphone producers already integrated the function blue light reduction on smartphones a while ago. However, by applying the function, the colors might not appear as bright so that it is often not used. Due to the constant impact, the high consumption of blue light can also result in various long-term effects. To start with, the highly energetic light can affect our sleeping rhythm. Besides, it can fasten retina diseases (due to old age) or cause cataract. To prevent the eyes from blue light, special lenses and glasses can help to filter the amount of blue light to reduce it to a less harmful level.
Now coming back to our sunscreen scenario: Putting the amount of time we sunbathe in relation to the time we look at screens every day, a protection of the eyes by blue light filter glasses seems at least as necessary as sunscreen. Don’t you think so, Kapten?
