#2 Canal District:
When you think of Amsterdam, you automatically think of the picturesque canals and bridges that can be found throughout the city! More than 160 canals, with a distance of more than 100 kilometers, run through the whole city, and are therefore an essential part of the unique flair and cityscape, making Amsterdam a true work of art! The canals of the Dutch capital have even been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2010 and even Venice - being the capital of bridges and canals - is nothing next to the size of Amsterdam's "canal belt"! Not only the look of the waterways is a true highlight of every Amsterdam trip, but also a canal cruise should definitely be on everyone’s to-do list. A boat trip on the canal gives you the perfect opportunity to relax after a long sightseeing tour, and gives you the only chance to admire the sights of the city from a completely different perspective! And for all those who likes it a little bit more romantic, should definitely not miss the view of the canals at night - where the illuminated bridges bathe the waterways in a breathtaking light and brings everyone to cloud 9!
#3 Royal Palace:
A visit to the Royal Palace is definitely not only for people who can recite the order of the Dutch succession to the throne in their sleep! Situated directly on the bustling Dam Square, the Royal Palace is considered THE historical and cultural building of the Dutch Golden Age and is still one of Amsterdam's most important landmarks today! So if you've always wanted to know how the royals of this world are set up and you'd like to get some insider information about the Dutch royal family, take the opportunity to join one of the guided tours and let yourself be carried away into the world of queens and kings! Oh, and another little tip: As soon as you've sniffed enough noble air, all you have to do is enter the palace courtyard and let yourself drift away from the pulsating center of the city - because on the "Dam" you'll not only find countless souvenir shops and snack stands, but also a whole range of different street artists who will delight the crowds with their performances!
Once you've had enough of the sightseeing and tourist hustle and bustle of the city, just spend a few relaxing hours in Vondelpark! The "Garden of the Amsterdammers" is one of the most popular meeting places for young and old, and offers the perfect opportunity to simply breathe! Whether you're looking for a nice spot on one of the spacious meadows or strolling past the small lakes and rose beds, Vondelpark is the ideal place to treat yourself to a short break and just relax! In summer you can also visit numerous free concerts and cultural events on the park's own open-air stage, and some cool restaurants and cafés are just a stone's throw away from Vondelpark! So if you want to get to know the greenest place in Amsterdam, a trip to Vondelpark is a must!
#5 De Wallen - the Red Light District:
Even if some people are a little skeptical about the famous red light district, "De Wallen" is as much a part of Amsterdam as cheese is to the Netherlands! Amsterdam's oldest district is still a place that arouses people's curiosity and plays with the attractions of the forbidden. Of course it is undisputed that everyone who thinks of the red light district immediately has pictures of lightly dressed ladies in illuminated shop windows in their heads, but by this time "De Wallen" has a lot more to offer! Besides the countless bars and nightclubs, there are small breweries, chic bruin cafés (traditional Dutch pubs), art galleries and lots of delicious food - so you see, the red light district is anything but a no-go area! Whether during the day or at night, "De Wallen" always invites you to an exciting scouting tour and if the ladies of the night still give you the creeps, you can simply make a small detour to the neighboring district "Zeedijk" and explore the special atmosphere in Amsterdam's Chinatown!
Amsterdam doesn’t just offer cultural highlights. It is also quite well established in culinary arts! Throughout the city, one excellent restaurant is followed by another, making it far from easy to decide where to eat! However, if you don't feel like choosing a specific dish, you should definitely visit the "Foodhallen"! A few minutes from the city centre, you'll find a large industrial hall with around 20 snack stands that offer delicacies from all over the world and make every gourmet's heart race! From star cuisine to street-food – the “Foodhallen” definitely have something for everyone and with their relaxed and sociable atmosphere they provide a very special taste adventure!
No country in the world is as crazy about the two-wheeled means of transportation as the Netherlands! Thus it’s no wonder that every Dutchman has an average of 2 1/2 bicycles and that there are twice as many bikes in the whole country as there are cars! Also Amsterdam is an absolute pioneer when it comes to bicycle friendliness and is therefore called the cycling capital of the world! Nowhere else can you explore the sights of a big city as relaxed as on a bike in Amsterdam, and, of course, without the annoying bus or train travel! For this reason you should definitely rent a bike from one of the many rental shops in the city and give yourself the real Amsterdam experience on the 400km cycle path! ‘Cause let's be honest: The Netherlands without bicycles would be like Italy without pizza!
So Kaptens, do you now have the urge to visit the Dutch capital and explore one or two tips from our Amsterdam Bucket List? Then grab your favorite travel buddy and make your way to one of the most beautiful cities in the world, which will enchant you with its very special charm!
Of course we'd also be delighted if you'd make a stop in our pop-up store during your stay in Amsterdam, and visit us at Leidsestraat 60-62, one of Amsterdam's most famous shopping streets! Starting November 15, 2019, you can visit our Pop-Up Store in the middle of the city for whole two months and discover our Kapten products off-line! Of course we have also planned a big Pop-Up-Store Opening for the 16th of November, where many nice activities and surprises will be waiting for you!
